lavender Tell me, can anyone really look at that lavender field and not smell the lavender and instantly feel calm and relaxed?

I really love almost any essential oil I try.  But, for day one of “An Oil a Day” I decided to showcase Lavender.  It is, in my opinion one of the most useful oils, with many uses and most well known to everyone.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a scent that’s a wonderful blend of fresh, floral, clean, and calm.  Because of this dynamic aroma this flower is a classic for perfumes, soaps, fresheners, and beauty products.   Lavender essential oil isn’t just a favorite because of its classic scent—but also because it has so many uses.

Lavender oil is a great beginner oil and a must for every home.

Here are a few ways you can use Lavender essential oil:

  1. Put a few drops into a diffuser and the scent will create a calming, relaxed feeling in the room.  This is great at night in your bedroom.
  2. Fill a squirt bottle with water, add a few drops and use as a “spritz” for pillows and linens to aid in relaxation and sleep.
  3. Add a few drops to your favorite fragrance free lotion and use on your skin.  It is great for calming redness in the skin.
  4. Many people use lavender oil to help with allergies.  I have found that a drop applied inside each nostril stops that sniffly, sneezing, itchy nose that happens when my allergies flare up.  Since this isn’t a medication – you can reapply as often as you wish.

In my home we all use the Lavender for allergies – even the kids.  It has done wonders and my young grandchildren reach for the Lavender when they have that itchy runny nose!  When I use it topically in my nose, my allergy symptoms are gone in a short time.

Lavender Relaxation Soak

  • Fill the bathtub with really warm water.
  • Add 1 cup of Epsom salts or Dead Sea Salt

bowl of lavender bath salt - beauty treatment

bowl of lavender bath salt – beauty treatment

  • Add 4-5 drops of Lavender oil

I find the Dead Sea Salts or Pink Himalayan salt work best.  I often mix up a large batch – just add the oil to the sea salts and store in a GLASS container.  (oils will leach into plastic over time).  This is the most relaxing bath and it is also great for your skin and hair.  You have got to give it a try!

Lavender oil is a great start when trying essential oils.  I have to say that not all essential oils are the same and I definitely recommend using 100% pure therapeutic grade oils.  Young Living is the company I trust because of their sead to seel guarantee.

I’ve Got an Oil for That!

You guys, I just LOVE my essential oils!  Those little bottles right there – they are so AMAZING!  In my house it is often heard – “Ask my mom, she’s got an oil for that”.  My whole family uses essential oils everyday.  We use them for better sleep, dealing with stress, better looking skin, coughs and sniffles, rashes, stomach aches, headaches . . . . oh just for everything.

Essential oils come from plants and flowers in nature.  They are extracted from the plants and then we have the pure oil to use.  Because oils are not medications our bodies just use what they need,  the oils bring balance in the body.  In other words, they give us what we need for our bodies to function well.  I don’t claim these oils heal disease or cure illness – but there is a lot of research out there to validate their use.  Just one example:

Frankincense has been studied by the National Institutes of Health and found to affect cancer cells.  Read the conclusion of the study here .

Essential oils have antioxidant properties, antimicrobial properties and are absorbed through the skin easily.  More scientific info from the NIH .

A lot of people enjoy the smell of essential oils.  They do smell good!  I diffuse them in my home to clear odors and for a “happy smell”.   Smelling those oils can actually affect your mood.  When you inhale something through your nose, the olfactory center carries those little molecules right up to the limbic system in our brain.  The limbic system is the seat of our emotions.  So just think about how some smells remind you of certain places or events.  Now it makes sense, right?  What we smell affects our emotional center.

Smelling_Lavender_large I sleep so much better after discovering an essential oil blend called Peace and Calming.  Using one drop on the bottom of my feet each night ends up in restful sleep and waking up feeling rested.  My whole family depends on this oil now.  One day my 6 year old granddaughter woke up looking like she had a rough night.  When we asked her what was wrong, she said “momma forgot to give us our oils last night”.   That pretty much is all the proof I need.

Here’s a word of warning.  Not all essential oils are the same.  I used to buy oils at the health food store.  They smelled good but I never really saw any results from them.  When I started using 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils I definitely noticed results.  So, the less expensive oils at the store and usually diluted with a carrier oil such as almond oil or jojoba oil.  Pure essential oils are expensive to produce and there is a limited number of plants available each season to harvest oils from.  The oils I use are from Young Living.  It is a company that has been in business for 20 years. They grow their own plants and oversee all the harvesting, distillation and packaging.  Here’s more info about the seed to seal guarantee .

For the next 10 days, I will be featuring a different oil each day here on the blog.  These will be basic oils that are inexpensive and have many uses.  Check back each day and I am sure you will learn some interesting things you never knew.  I love comments and questions – please let me know your thoughts or specific oils you are interested in.  Do you already use essential oils?  Tell us your favorites.

For more information check out this link with lots of useful oily info .  Have a great day – pay attention to the smells around you and see how they affect how you feel.   deboil20drop20bottle_full

About your skin . . .

Let’s talk about skin today, shall we?  The past few days I have talked to several people (friends, patients, coworkers) who have skin issues.  These people have everything from dry skin to rashes to acne.  I am amazed at how much money they are spending on expensive creams, dermatology appointments, prescription creams!  Seems to me if I went to a dermatologist every month, tried several different creams he/she recommended and a year later my skin still isn’t any better – I might just try something new.  Just sayin’.

Do we even really take care of our skin?  I don’t think most people do.  I think our skin is abused, neglected and crying out for help.scream

  • Our skin is the largest organ on our body.
  • The skin is a protector of our inner body, a covering.  It is porous – so anything we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies through the pores and enters our blood stream in less than a minute.
  • Our skin gets thirsty and hungry.  When we don’t drink enough water, the skin cells can get dehydrated and shrink making our skin look dull and dry.
  • Collagen is a protein that gives our skin support and elasticity.   The collagen is damaged by cigarette smoking, ultraviolet rays from the sun and high sugar intake.

That’s the reason that slapping a little moisturizer on once in awhile doesn’t count as taking care of your skin.  We need to look at our diets – limit sugar intake, drink plenty of water, and eat protein which provides amino acids for collagen formation.  We do the most for our skin by feeding it from the inside.  Collagen in beauty creams is too big of a molecule to be absorbed through our pores it doesn’t feed our skin.

Be good to your skin – you never get a replacement.

I am really passionate about informing people about the toxins we put on our skin.  Since most of the things we put on our skin are quickly absorbed they then enter our bloodstream.  Are you even aware of what chemicals you put on your skin each day? Well, LET ME TELL YOU . . . . . .

Here’s an example:

Soap and shampoo – parabens, sulfates, triclosan, fragrance

Moisturizer – petroleum, phtalates, fragrance

Deodorant – triclosan, sulfates, fragrance

Now, here’s why you should be worried . . . . . . .

Parabens, Petroleum and many others are hormone disruptors.  They alter hormone levels in our body and can affect hormone production and have been shown to cause cancer.  That means in actual research these statements have been proven.  Why do you think our kids are maturing at a younger age.  Why do 8 year old girls have breasts and acne? Hormone levels affect our fertility, phthalates actually damage sperm.  Our products are altering our hormones!

Triclosan is widely used in deodarants and antibacterial soaps and toothpaste.  What is triclosan?  It is a hormone disruptor.  It harms our immune system. It causes bacteria to grow that resist antibiotics. It decreases thyroid function.  Triclosan is an aromatic compound and originally registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a pesticide.  In a 2008 study triclosan was found in the urine of 75% of people randomly tested.

Triclosan has been found in breast cancer tumors.

I don’t know about you – but I really don’t want these chemicals in my body.  So I try to keep them off of my skin.  Read those labels.  You need products without these chemicals. Chemicals and fragrances are actually irritating to our skin so don’t help with the very problems we are trying to solve.

Take Time for You!

image-relaxation2We may not all have access to a cliff overlooking the ocean, but it is important to find a quiet place during this hectic season.  Everyone needs some peace and quiet, time to relax, recharge and re-energize.  When we are rested and unhurried, we deal better with the demands of each day.

Unfortunately the holiday season has become a time of rushing around, feeling pressured to but the right gift for everyone.   We may be stressed by the cost of the gifts, afraid we didn’t get the best gift and the receiver won’t be happy, afraid we didn’t do enough this year.  Everyone is so busy rushing around that we forget to enjoy the beauty of the holiday season.

So, here are a few ideas to help you recharge, right in the middle of the hustle and bustle:

If you haven’t got an ocean view – make one.  Get a large picture of palm trees, the ocean, a lake, a forest – whatever you love. Post it in your bathroom.  You can go in there, close the door and relax and deep breathe in front of the poster.  Better yet – take a nice warm bath with a beautiful view.

tea_saucer_drink_spoon_mug_hd-wallpaper-92283Set aside 15 minutes every night before bed. Sit quietly – no TV, no computer, no cell phone.  Sip on a cup of chamomile tea. Just concentrate on quiet, breathe slowly and deeply.  The rhythm of slow deep breathing is quite relaxing.

Some people find certain sounds relaxing – such as the sound of thunderstorms, the sound of the ocean, the sound of birds chirping.  You can easily find these sounds online and listen while doing your relaxation.

So this holiday season – give yourself a gift!  The gift of relaxation.sleepingpuppyspooning

You will feel better, you will feel re-energized and better able to handle the many activities with joy.  Remember, a good night’s sleep is so important!  People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to get sick, are more likely to be overweight, and have high blood pressure.

What are your relaxation tricks?

Are your “Wellthy”?

Those marketing wizards have come up with a new term – wellthy.  What does that mean?  It refers to the growing focus on health and wellness.  Read on for some staggering stats about this growing trend.

If you read any business journal or search industry trends online you will read about the growth of the health and wellness industry.

Health and Wellness is a trillion dollar global industry.

If people are spending TRILLIONS of dollars then I want to be selling something in that industry!

Here are the players in this industry:

Beauty and Antiaging products                      $679 billion dollars

Fitness – mind/body/exercise                         $390 billion dollars

Nutrition – healthy eating/weight loss        $277 billion dollars

Wellness is defined as the state of being healthy as a result of deliberate effort.  As you can see, a lot of people are putting a lot of money into being healthy.  Wellness has now become a status symbol and therefore the term wellthy.  A wellness mindset is prevalent in the U.S. among middle and upper middle class.  The young adult generation termed “Millenials” are also driving social media and marketing trends.

49% want organic products

44% prefer eco-friendly companies and eco-friendly packaging

based on their age, this group probably hasn’t built a brand loyalty.

In addition, all across the globe – online sales are increasing.  It will be interesting to see what percentage of this year’s holiday sales were online purchases.

So . . . . . if you look at those facts above, you can see where the most money will be made now and in the future.  No matter what the economy, people wash their bodies and shampoo their hair.

How can you take advantage and be successful?

  1. Products that are pure – vegan, organic
  2. Beauty, anti-aging, nutrition, weight loss
  3. Be able to sell online
  4. Eco-friendly packaging – recycled boxes, less waste

I am taking advantage of the huge wellness market.  If you would like more information or are just a little bit interested – email me.  I would love to have you join me!  Contact me here      Deb

The Key to Success?

I was challenged to review my blog title and see if it needed to be revised or changed.  I thought about it all day:  Dream Big then Believe.  That is exactly it!  Not only is it the title line on my blog, it is the key to success!

Have you noticed how many people are making lots of money as motivational speakers or writing self development books?  I have listened to many of the speakers and have read many of the books.  There is something that is common to all – they are passionate, positive and dreamers.  The speakers motivate you by getting you to dream big and believe that you can achieve your dreams.  And it works!  After listening to a good motivational speaker I believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to.  Dreaming makes us happy, believing we can achieve our dreams motivates us and gives us energy.  Unfortunately, there are obstacles along the way, there is a lot of negativity and there are setbacks.  Over time, the positive attitude and belief in our abilities starts to fade away.  Negativity takes over, we are less motivated, and we end up putting our dreams on the shelf.

Okay – get those dreams off the shelf and dust them off!

The key to success is belief! how do we stay positive, keep believing and charge forward through the obstacles, setbacks and negativity?  Here are a few suggestions I have gotten from reading and studying the subject ;

  1.  Really see your dream – picture it every night before you go to sleep, see yourself living your dream.
  2. Create a dream (or vision) board – post pictures of where you will live, what type of clothes you will wear, places you will travel things you will do.  Whatever you dream of – put it where you can see it daily.
  3. Write down affirmations – positive sayings or goals and say them several times every day.  Speaking words imprints on our subconscious.  So speak up!  Say those affirmations with belief, conviction and out loud!
  4. Remember – whether you think you can or you think you can’t . . .you are right!  Speak positively and believe!

There you have it – build a dream so big and so strong that you cannot help but work toward it everyday.  Please comment and let me know what you think or how this information helped you.  I would love to hear your thoughts.

Blogging with a Purpose

I started blogging with a vague idea of what I wanted to accomplish. Then I decided people would like to know what my blog is about so they could decide if they would like to follow along.  Besides, organization just makes life simpler.

My purpose in blogging is not unique – I want to share information.  I want to share information that people can really use and get personal benefit from.  Then if they share the information there is a ripple effect.  One piece of information shared here might help someone way across the world.  It is quite interesting to be able to blog and have conversations with people all across the globe, where anyone can comment.  I think reading the comments about my posts is the most enjoyable part of blogging.  So, if you are reading this . . . . leave a comment :).

The information I plan to share on my blog is related to health, wellness, personal development and beauty.  A “little something for everyone”.

As a medical professional I like to share information on health and wellness that is reliable, based in science and useful to help people feel their best.  This information is not meant to diagnose or treat, it is just good information that some people may find helpful.  I will also be sharing a lot of information about diet and nutrition.  That is such a “hot topic” but such a misunderstood topic with a lot of crazy information out there that could actually be harmful.

I will share information on skin care and some of the harmful substances in the products we use,  then I will throw in some make up and beauty tips.

I am a business owner, building an international Arbonne business so I will be referring to these products throughout my posts.  I’m not just promoting products and advertising – I really believe these are the best products out there – for everyone.  Also, I don’t think most people are really aware that products we use everyday can actually be harmful to our bodies.  This isn’t just some spam or promotional gimmick – there is scientific information and I hope to share that with my readers.

I have been doing a lot of reading and self development lately. So, in an effort to pass that on, look for posts with book reviews and positive self development information.  It will be interesting to review this in one year and see how far I have come and how many followers I gain, new people I meet virtually.   deb

Good Bacteria??

indigestionEven with all the food we eat and the high rate of obesity, a lot of Americans are malnourished.

Basically, we are fat, we are miserable and our bodies are starving.

A lot of the problem is related to poor digestion.  You hear a lot about probiotics – why do we need them?  In our gut we have good and bad bacteria. Probiotics are the good bacteria.  A proper ratio between the good and bad bacteria is associated with health and well-being.  Antibiotics and poor diets kill off much of the good bacteria, allowing the bad bacteria to overgrow.  The result may be bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, irregular bowels as well as other health problems.

Research studies show that a proper bacteria ratio and a functional intestinal system play a role in mental health and can decrease depression and anxiety. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter affecting mood, is found mainly in the intestinal system.  That proper ratio also strengthens our immune system

So, What Can You Do to Improve your Intestinal System?

Prebiotics act like food for probiotics.  They are a non digestable plant fiber.  It is nearly impossible to get enough prebiotics from food sources such as chicory or apple and fruit skins.  Many people eat yogurt in an effort to get enough probiotics.  The problem is most active bacteria in probiotics are killed off by body heat and stomach acid.  Bacillus coagulans is one probiotic that survives best in the intestine.  2 studies showed that proper balance of this bacteria decreased abdominal pain and bloating in people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  Ingestion of probiotics can help people that suffer from recurrent yeast infections as it changes the alkalinity of the body.  Nutrient absorption from the food we eat is improved, bowel function is improved and people see better weight and appetite control.

Use of probiotics can also strengthen our immune system.  A proper balance between good and bad bacteria in our gut influences the health and well being of our entire body and even our mood.

Once again, not all probiotics are created equal.

  • You need the prebiotics as food for the probiotics.
  • You need the probiotics that survive against body heat and stomach acid
  • You also can benefit from digestive enzymes – to better break down complex carbohydrates, fats and proteins for improved absorption

I take Digestion Plus everyday because I feel it is the best product of it’s type on the market.  It contains Bacillus coagulans, prebiotics and digestive enzymes.  It doesn’t contain sugars or any other harmful fillers.  It is certified vegan, gluten free and Kosher.  I mix one small packet in a bottle of water or other drink each day.  More info available: Arbonne Digestion Plus    digestion plus

Thanks for reading, I hope you find this information helpful.  Comment below if you have questions or suggestions for future content.  Here’s to healthy guts! 🙂

Who needs Vitamin D?

  Everybody needs Vitamin D!

In the winter months, UVB rays from the sun are blocked in most areas so our Vitamin D levels are at their lowest.  Coincidence then, that winter is also flu season?  There are researchers who think not.  Studies have shown that many Americans are Vitamin D deficient.  We just do not get enough Vitamin D in our diet and we need the sun to help our bodies synthesize the vitamin D.

So what does Vitamin D have to do with the flu?

Vitamin D supports our immune system (the system in our body that is responsible for fighting off illness). Immune cells in our bodies have vitamin D receptors. Increased vitamin D activates cells in the immune system that are like natural antibiotics – they kill bacteria.  The vitamin D receptor cells also regulate inflammatory substances which are partly responsible for some of the symptoms we experience with the flu.

There have been several research studies throughout the world that have shown that people with low levels of vitamin D have a higher flu rate.  Studies also have shown that higher levels of vitamin D were associated with a shorter duration of flu.  Many healthcare providers recommend increasing our vitamin D intake above the daily recommended amount.

If you want to take Vitamin D to stay healthy – start now.  Your body will need to build up your vitamin D level.  I take between 2000 and 4000 units daily. A word of caution – you can get too much vitamin D and that can cause serious problems.   So, check with your healthcare provider about safe dosages.

The Flu – Just Say No!

In the U.S. this time of year is the beginning of the dreaded “flu season”.   I don’t know about you, but I just do not have time to be sick with the flu.  And I certainly do not feel like dealing with how the flu makes me feel.  So, this year . .  . be ready, stand up and say NO!  to the flu.  Keep reading – I am not talking about flu shots to prevent the flu.flu

The flu is a viral illness caused by the influenza virus.  When the weather changes,  our immune system works overtime to cope with conditions that could make us sick.  That influenza virus comes right along – when our immune system may be at it’s weakest.  A strong and intact immune system can fight off the flu – we may feel a bit sick or achy for a day or so, but not as bad as a typical course of flu.  The flu virus can enter our body, our strong immune system attacks and we clear the virus.

So how do I fight off the flu?  I don’t want one of those flu shots!

There are several ways to boost your immune system.  First of all, make sure you are getting plenty of sleep each night, eating healthy and drinking plenty of water.  Avoid stress (as much as you can) as stress also challenges our immune system.  Other things like Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Zinc support a healthy and  functional immune system.  I will post more details about each of these substances over the next few days.  Frequent handwashing is very important in avoiding any type of illness. germ-478x600There are millions of germs just waiting for you on telephones, handrails, door knobs, shopping carts – everywhere!

My recommendation is to start taking a daily immunity support product.  I use a product called Immunity Support from Arbonne International.  This company has been vegan and gluten free for 35 years, their products do not contain harmful chemicals.

252684-echinacea-purpureaImmunity Support contains 3 forms of echinacea as well as golden seal.  These natural substances come from plants.  (The coneflower pictured above is the source for echinacea.)  They stimulate the immune system, activate chemicals that decrease inflammation in the body and also contain phenols that are antioxidants. In addition, Immunity Support contains adaptogens which help the body cope with stress.   There are scientific studies that support the use of echinacea and golden seal for preventing colds and flu.  Personally, I do not get flu vaccines, I try to avoid sick people and always take Immunity Support one pill daily starting in October.  If I feel a scratchy throat, achy or feverish – then I take 2 pills twice a day for 2 days.  This works for my family – I am not making any claims or prescribing – I am just providing information for you.

Here’s to a healthy winter season for us all!   Get your Immunity Support here

Remember – check back as I give more info on other ways to fight off the flu.  immunity
